Using bikes for the
approach. |
Scramble:
RT 12.5; 6.75 up. I initially wanted to do this trip on skis but
honestly, using a bike for the approach and taking avalanche hazard out
of the equation became more appealing. Jay and Derek were interested in
joining us for this foray in the mountains, we met at the Mount Shark
trailhead. We biked to the bridge over Turbulent Creek. This reminded
me of my recent unpleasant detour this way, the difference this time
was I knew where I was going and the weather was stellar. At the
bridge, we stashed the bikes. We followed a crude trail on the east
side
of the canyon, this hike was starting on a high note! After 4 hours of
easy bushwhacking, we were nearing the hanging valley and
the objective; I was thrilled to see much yellow in the otherwise green
forest. A little further, larches in full fall color welcomed us to
treeline. We had lunch and continued in the beautiful upper draw;
delightful hiking past a couple of tarns led to the
ascent slopes. The climb is straightforward and we soon stood atop
rejoined with our speedy friends. We enjoyed the view for what seemed
to be too short of a summit stay before our buddies started to put
their pack back on... After a quick respite, chasing the rabbits
resumed... We didn't lollygag much coming down as we tried to keep up
and beat the darkness. We regrouped at the bikes with enough daylight
to make it to the car before dark. When we arrived at the car, Jay was
waiting for us with a cold beverage for a good cheer!
