Tim Jones Peak.
Snowshoe trip: RT 4.0 (includes Pump Peak); 30 minutes up from Pump Peak. After reaching Pump Peak, I set my eyes on Tim Jones Peak. I was looking forward to leaving the hordes of people behind; the path ahead seemed deserted. I quickly descended Pump's summit block and donned my snowshoes. The conditions were good, and the weather was great; it was a perfect day to be in the mountains. With little effort, I reached the summit; an older European man was taking pictures. We conversed briefly while I also took pictures. As I scrutinized Mount Seymour, he asked me if I was considering an attempt, to which I answered I was going to give it a try. He warned me about some acquaintances of his being swept down the steep slope while traversing to the col between Tim Jones and Seymour; he also added I should have crampons and an axe. I hadn't researched this outing at all; the truth is, I intended to continue past this peak only if conditions permitted. After a short descent from the top, I stood by the steep slope that rounds up Tim Jone's shoulder. I felt comfortable proceeding without an axe as the snow surface wasn't icy; however, I had to take my snowshoes off due to stiff snow and boot across. There was a ski track from the lone skier; skis were a better option, granting flotation and edging. My spidey senses alerted me when my steps punched through the snow into a void. Experience told me the slab of wind-affected snow could potentially be problematic. Pulling the plug at this point was an easy decision. Before climbing back to the first peak and returning to the parking lot, I enjoyed a quiet break soaking in the vibrant sunshine with a raven companion.
