Hike:
RT 6.25; 3.0 up. I’d had this summit under my radar for quite some
time, and with my truck back on the road, it seemed like a perfect
early-spring objective. We took advantage of the popular groomed
snowmobile trail to the Blue Lake Cabin. The Hunters Range is famous
for sledding; it hosts some of the best alpine riding in the region.
Several trails lead to nice summits such as Mara, Owlhead, and Queest.
For this one, we followed the directions for Cummins Lake; the road is
rough but negotiable with clearance and low speed. We drove past the
lake and parked in a cutblock near the obvious snowmobile trail,
visible on Google Earth. We located the wide trail; it was snow-free
for just a short section. The path was easy to follow as it climbed the
forested ridge to treeline. When the terrain opened up, we came upon a
beautiful snow-covered lake at the foot of gentle, sweeping slopes;
shortly thereafter, we reached the cabin. We took a break there,
basking in the sun on the front steps before resuming our ascent to the
summit. The climb was pleasantly gradual, and to our surprise, the top
was snow-free. We sat and enjoyed the view for quite some time; there
was no wind, and the sun felt splendid. Returning was fast and easy; it
was a great day in the mountains.
