Neapolitan Peak from the pass at the foot of Boulder Peak.
|
Scramble: RT 6.75 (includes
Boulder Peak & Lakeview Mountain); 1.0 up from Boulder Peak. After
ascending Boulder Peak with little visibility, I enjoyed a long lunch and waited
for the fog to lift. Once I could see the connecting ridge to
Neapolitan Peak, I descended straight from the summit. I hiked to the
saddle, negotiating easy terrain. The pleasant ridge walk is
interrupted by sections of simple scrambling; I circumvented
challenges on the western aspect. After 50 minutes, I stood on the
first summit of Neapolitan. I continued to the second peak as I was
uncertain which was the true summit; they appeared to be the same
height. Turns out that the second peak is less than 10 meters lower.
Backtracking was straightforward. From the saddle, I saved some time by aiming
towards the ridge instead of re-ascending Boulder Peak; I used the path
of least resistance. Once again, the traverse through the boulder field
to return to the trail between Boulder and Lakeview proved to be the
crux due to shifting rocks. After locating the trail, I decided to
continue towards the summit of Lakeview Mountain instead of
backtracking to the lakes.

Neapolitan Peak is also known as Layer Peak; the reason is obvious.
